Ranch is Classroom for a Day!

Refugio County eighth-graders experience South Texas wildlife and environment firsthand
Fennessey Ranch hosted the annual Earth Sciences field day for many eighth graders in Refugio County. The field day consisted of eight stations with a hayride, a dairy booth, some livestock, vegetation study, a menagerie of stuffed birds, interpretation hikes, and a talk about pollution. The Wetlands Connection Center helped sponsor this event in conjunction with the Fennessey Ranch, the University of Houston, the Copano Bay Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Center for Coastal Studies at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The day provided a great "hands-on" learning experience for these kids, and a chance to experience science in a new way and several 8th graders agree.
"The best one (station), I think, was the water one, the one about pollution," Refugio eighth-grader Charlean Mondine said. "There are so many things I didn't know."
Ranch Manager Sally Crofutt hopes for each year when all of the eighth-graders in Refugio County come to learn about wildlife and agriculture. |

Students were armed with cameras and lenses and took hundreds of pictures of surrounding wildlife. They also toured other areas of the ranch experiencing all sorts or wildlife including birds, wild pigs, deer, and alligators.
