Fernandez Scholarship
DATE: November 09, 2011

Dr. John Fernandez has contributed a total of $10,000 to the scholarship bearing his name. The John D. Fernandez Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science is intended to assist deserving full-time students pursuing a degree in Computer Science or Informatics from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
Dr. Fernandez sought to capitalize on the University's stewardship policy that says the University will match faculty gifts with a donation of its own.
With available funding of more than $10,000, the Fernandez Scholarship will be well equipped to help a student who demonstrates financial need. Written within the scholarship's selection criteria are requirements that the recipient pursue a degree in Computer Science or Informatics and has a 3.5 grade point average. But Fernandez is also intent on ensuring the money stays local, and reaches a specific kind of student.
It is Fernandez's desire that preference in the awarding of the scholarship be given to a first-generation college student from the Coastal Bend area. The student should graduate in the top five percentile of their high school class. And Dr. Fernandez would like for the student to come from Nueces, San Patricio, Bee, Live Oak, Jim Wells, Refugio, Aransas, or Kleberg County - the counties in closest proximity to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's campus.
Entering freshmen who meet the requirements and preferences detailed above qualify for the scholarship. Application information can be found at the University's Scholarship Programs website: http://scholarships.tamucc.edu.
