ADVISING

Application to veterinary school is done through one of many third-party organizations. Applicants to schools outside of Texas should visit the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC). These groups help those applying to veterinary school distribute their application to the veterinary schools. Most schools will require a standardized test score, either the GRE or the GRE Biology subject test or the Veterinary Medical College Admissions Test (VCAT). Application to the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine is done through the Texas Medical and Dental Application service. The link can be found here - Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service (TMDAS)

Each student has been assigned a faculty mentor to guide him/her through the undergraduate years and help him/her prepare for professional school. Students are matched with faculty mentors who have expertise in advising for particular careers. It is important that students indicate which professional area (medical, dental, veterinary, physician assistant, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic, graduate school, etc.) they plan to enter so that the appropriate mentor can be assigned.

Students must see their faculty mentors each semester, preferably as soon as the schedules for the next semester is published. It is to the student's advantage to establish a relationship with his/her faculty mentor. The mentor can help the student and will be responsible for writing the important letter of evaluation for professional school.back to top

YOUR APPLICATION

Prospective veterinary students living in a state that has a veterinary school / college may have an advantage over those than do not. State-supported veterinary colleges do give preference to in-state applicants . However, some states without veterinary school provide excellent contract arrangements for their residents. Other veterinary colleges / schools do not discriminate between resident and non-resident applicants.

For a complete list of contracting states and provinces, please order and consult the AAVMC sponsored publication Veterinary Medical School Admissions Requirements in the United States and Canada (VMSAR) book by calling Purdue University Press at 800-933-9637.

The VCAT sets the standard with five content areas: biology, chemistry, verbal ability, quantitative ability and reading comprehension. Additional benefits of VCAT include:

  • 230 multiple - choice questions
  • Three test dates each academic year
  • Approximately 3.5 hours to administer
  • Test results within four to five weeks
  • Test results to meet program needs
  • Strong predictive validity

TEST SESSION FACTS

Applicants can view requirements at the websites of the schools (see list above) or visit: http://www.aavmc.org

If you are applying to a veterinary college through VMCAS:

    • Send all standardized test and GRE scores directly to the VMCAS colleges you are applying. (VMCAS college codes for VCAT, MCAT, TOEFL, & GRE are located on individual descriptor pages located in the application

If applying to multiple schools with the same test requirements, be sure to take the appropriate test no later than the earliest deadline data. You must arrange for scores from all standardized tests to be reported as soon as the scores are available. If your test scores are not immediately reported to the appropriate destination, your selected school(s) may not consider your application for admission. Be certain that your identifying information (name, social security number, and date of birth) is exactly the same on your test score and application records.

AAVMC institutions may not accept standardized test scores older than two to three years. The AAVMC recommends applicants take all required standardized tests prior to Fall 2005 to ensure all institutional deadlines are met. Request all standardized test scores to be sent to the appropriate destination as soon as the scores are available. If GRE scores are required, complete all three sections in the examination: Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical. International applicants may also be required to take the TOEFL exam and /or other English proficiency tests in addition to the standardized tests listed below. Please read all application instructions and contact selected institutions directly for more information about all standardized test requirements, including test deadlines and minimum acceptable scores GRE General Information(pdf)
