Nadina Duran-Hutchings & George Tintera Receive Teacher Quality Grant
With the exception of 1994, when
she did not submit, Nadina Duran-Hutchings has received Teacher Quality
grant funding every year since 1994.
The title
of her 2008 project is "Quantitative Experience for Decision Making". The
co-PI for the project is George Tintera.
The
goal of the project is to prepare high school teachers to deliver a new
course for high school students entitled "Advanced Quantitative Methods
for Decision Making". The first pilot course will launch during the
2009-2010 school year, and Duran-Hutchings plans to use the grant to
prepare the teachers of the new course ahead of time to develop the
experience needed to teach new content. The use of the grant differs from
traditional changes in school curriculum in that instead of changes being
followed by late professional development so that teachers are on their
own for some time before receiving training, the teachers receive needed
training beforehand. Says Duran-Hutchings: "We wanted to operate in a
different form by providing the professional development early. The
selected teachers will enroll in three graduate level courses that will
provide in-depth knowledge and implementation experience."
