Listserves

A listserv is a powerful communication tool that allows members to post suggestions, announcements or questions to a large number of people at the same time. When you submit a question or something that you want to share to the listserv, your submission is distributed to all of the other people on that list.

Each listserv targets pre-determined topics and discussions. Before submitting a query or a comment to the entire listserv group, monitor the discussions. After a few days, you'll be able to tell what are acceptable submissions.

Each listserv has two different addresses.

  1. list address: This is the address you use to submit a query or share knowledge with the entire group. This message will be distributed to all people on the listserv. This is knows as "sending mail to the list."
  2. LISTSERV address: This is the address that you send commands to such as subscribing and unsubscribing. It is generally the same as the address for sending mail to the list, with "-request" inserted after the name of the list.

student with laptopThere are two ways to subscribe to or unsubscribe from a listserve. Depending on the configuration of the listserve, either of these methods may be used. Some lists may have certain features disabled.

  1. Send a message to the LISTSERV address (the one that includes "-request" after the name of the list) with the word "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" in the subject line.
  2. Go to the list info page and enter your email address. The list info pages can be found by following the links below.

There are a few general listserves for the College of Science and Technology; many classes and clubs also have individual listserves. Check with your professor or class syllabus to see if there is a listserve for your class.
