Writing for Assessment and Learning in the Natural and
Mathematical Sciences (WALS) is an NSF-funded project that adapts
Calibrated Peer Review (CPR)TM-- a software application
developed in chemistry -- for use in the other natural and
mathematical sciences. The project goals are:
- To create and implement student writing assignments
that address critical, complex content in the sciences.
- To better assess student understanding of key concepts
in the sciences.
- To enhance student learning essential content.
- To improve student ability to write clearly about
mathematics and science.
- To promote faculty inquiry into what makes certain
critical concepts challenging for students and how to
help student achieve mastery of this content.
CPRTM is a web-based writing program
with an additional
feature that helps students learn how to review each other's work.
This workshop will provide hands-on training on
CPR and attendees
will have access to individual help. During the workshop participants
will also author a draft assignment for later use.
