Exam 2 Terms:
Northwest Ordinance: Established policy that admitted the area's population as equal members of the political system. (1787)
Spoils system: Practice in which a political party, after winning an election, gives government jobs to its supporters, friends and relatives as a reward for working towards victory, and as an incentive to keep working for the party.
Nat Turner: An enslaved African American who led a rebellion of slaves and free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia that resulted in the deaths of about 60 white southerners. (August 21, 1831)
Patrick Henry: (Chloe Hernandez): Founding father, American attorney, planter and politician who became known as an orator during the movement for independence in Virginia in the 1770s. Henry led the opposition to the Stamp Act 1765 and is remembered for his "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech. He is regarded as one of the most influential champions of Republicanism and an invested promoter of the American Revolution and its fight for independence. After the Revolution, Henry was a leader of the anti-federalists in Virginia. He opposed the ratification of the Constitution, fearing that it endangered the rights of the States as well as the freedoms of individuals; he helped gain adoption of the Bill of Rights. By 1798 however, he supported President John Adams and the Federalists; he denounced passage of the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions as he feared the social unrest and widespread executions that had followed the increasing radicalism of the French Revolution.
John Adams: A very talented write, one of the founding fathers, the first Vice President, second President of the United States. Helped draft the Declaration of Independence at the first Continental Congress.
Northwest Ordinance: An act by Congress stating that the newly acquired land next to Canada would have no slavery, would guarantee civil liberties, and would eventually become states. (AKA Ultimate Statehood.)
Hamilton's Report on Manufactures: the magnum opus of Alexander Hamilton that urged the expanded use of protective tariffs as means to protect the nation's infant industries. He argued that the United States could only be politically independent if they were economically independent.
Virginia Plan: Was a plan proposing the creation of a two house legislature with the States population determining its representation in each. Smaller states were afraid that bigger states would control the government. (Brittany Arciniega)
Hinton Rowan Helper- He was a southern criticizer of slavery and wrote many pamphlets and books, including "Sociology for the south, or the failure of Free Society". Helper also greatly influenced abolition ideals in the south. (Avery Bertagna)
George Fitzhugh- He was a southern supporter of slavery who wrote that slavery benefited everybody and even white people should be enslaved. Fitzhugh also greatly influenced the pro slavery movement. (Avery Bertagna)
Benjamin Franklin Bache- Bache is the nephew of Benjamin Franklin. He wrote a newspaper called the Philadelphia Aurora that promoted Republican ideals. (Steven Gonzalez)
Diffusion: Spread of elements from a culture including ideas, styles, religions and technology (Chloe Shivers)
Covert Resistance- deliberate resistance to change but done in a manner that allows the perpetrators to appear as if they are not resisting. (Ana Varela)
