Earlier I asked you what you plan to get out of your college experience and what is college going to be for you? Maybe a better question is what are you going to contribute to the experience? The ball is in your court.

In small groups of about 4 people, share your different reasons for being in college and choosing this particular one (to the extent that you're comfortable).

Gallup on workforce (can be transferred to students):
26% engaged there and productive
55% disengaged just there, picking up a paycheck
19% actively disengaged undermining the organization (complaining, stealing, etc. it would be better if the 19% even come to work!)
This is your challenge! Build upon your strengths!

In small groups briefly share...
*Why are you in college?
*Who made that decision?
*Why did you choose to come to THIS college?
*What are your goals now that you are here?

**NOW THAT YOU'RE HERE---FOR WHATEVER THE REASON...What do you plan to get out of this experience? What is college going to be for you?

Two years ago our First Year Program adopted a Strengths approach to learning. going to have the opportunity to learn more about this and, more importantly, about yourself, in just a bit. First, however, I want to share a few findings with you.
*Studies (by Gallup) have shown that students leave college because of disillusionment, discouragement, and reduced motivation than because of a lack of ability or being dismissed. (Anderson) REPEAT

It has also been noted that the of college students have not made the decision to be there. They are there because it is expected of them, nothing else to do, etc. (Anderson)

Gallup spent more than three decades, holding in-depth interviews with over 2 million people---they discovered that top achievers, in virtually every profession, career, and field of achievement, all built their lives upon their natural talents.
These top achievers recognize their talents, build them into strengths, and apply them in their lives/career.
