4. Web Portfolios:

Possible Hosting Sites

I did a wix site over the weekend:

Over the weekend, you were asked to explore which of these platforms you want to use to create your portfolio. Think about why.

To start, you will need to create the following pages: a home page, biography, projects page, and contact information. You'll have lots of time to play around with this over the semester, so feel free to do so. Design and redesign, customize and recustomize. Email me a link to your portfolio site with the subject line "3303 Web Portfolio." This will count as the first check for your portfolio. (Remember they can be public, private, or unlisted)

At a minimum for next week, you need a section that has your reflection (we'll talk about this more on Tue and will upload your first portfolio). It could be text based, or it could be formatted in a different manner).

IF you are using wordpress:

Don't worry about doing it wrong. It's a learning experience. Play around.

4. Remember Threshold concepts:

  • “A threshold concept can be considered as akin to a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It represents a transformed way of understanding, or interpreting, or viewing something without which the learner cannot progress. As a consequence of comprehending a threshold concept there may thus be a transformed internal view of subject matter, subject landscape, or even world view. This transformation may be sudden or it may be protracted over a considerable period of time, with the transition to understanding proving troublesome. Such a transformed view or landscape may represent how people ‘think’ in a particular discipline, or how they perceive, apprehend, or experience particular phenomena within that discipline (or more generally).”
  • They are transformative-- in that, once understood, its potential effect on student learning and behaviour, is to occasion a significant shift in the perception of a subject, or part thereof.
  • Why are we learning about these?

5. Our entire world view is shaped by our language. This is called "ideolology." How did the reading define this?

6. Activity: NFL Protests, the reaction against protests, and other matters

  • Watch the two following videos:
    • As you watch, pay attention to the words the speaker uses.
      • What do they value?
      • What do they not value?
      • What do they make assumptions about?
      • What do they conflate (link together in a way that makes sense to them that reflects their own values--the Fox News host linking "being a veteran" with "standing for the anthem" or the sports caster using the word "protest" to link those who kneel for the anthem with Dr. Martin Luther King)
