The Idea of the Wicked Problem

According to a Wikipedia article, a wicked problem is defined as "a problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize. The use of the term "wicked" here has come to denote resistance to resolution, rather than evil. Moreover, because of complex interdependencies, the effort to solve one aspect of a wicked problem may reveal or create other problems."

Write for a moment right about a wicked problem that you concerns you. What makes this problem "wicked" --- that is, what makes it hard to understand, to define, and to solve?

Here are 5 things that concern me:

  • global warming
  • income inequality
  • poverty
  • racial divide and tensions
  • immigration policy in the U.S.
