Icebreaker

Below are 25 questions. Your mission is to find as many of your classmates who meet one of the following questions in the allotted time. Place their name into the first blank and then add onto the sentence. Basically to complete this you cannot simply find people and put a name in the blank. You have to add to the information that is already given to you -- thus actually meeting people.

Homework

  • Read the Syllabus. Come up with any questions you might have, and come to class prepared to discuss.
  • Read the first two paragraphs in the "Preface", the last paragraph and the list on page 2, and "Metaconcept" (Pgs. 15 & 16) in Naming What We Know. Take a few notes as you read and be prepared to discuss in class Friday. If you need a copy of the readings (as a one time deal) you can send me an email at jimena.burnett@tamucc.edu, and I will get them to you.
  • Create a Google Drive account. Create a folder With your name and the section number of this class (e.g. Chimene-Burnett-241).
  • Write a letter introducing yourself to me and your peers. Some of you may have already done this in the Discussion Forum. Even so, everybody will need to write this letter. Here are some questions to get you thinking about what you include:
    • Where you are from and how would explain that place to someone who has never heard of it?
    • What do you write and read? Provide an example of your reading or writing?
    • What do you want to be when you grow up?
    • What do you think about history?
    • What are your cultural influences or what is your cultural background?
    • What terrifies you about college?
    • Are you a cat or dog person? What makes that animal appealing or unappealing?

When wondering how much to write ask yourself what you want to share with the class, and what you want to know about others. Upload this document to your Google Drive account as "Introduction-Letter". We will publish these letters in class on Friday. Make certain you have your Google drive account up and running!
