Let's analyze the quote above (PSSSTTT... you are essentially doing this for every single Composition essay you write this semester)...

  • What is Shpancer arguing?
  • Putting this quote into context, how do we recognize the "point of view" when it is presented to us in reading or in large lecture?
    • Dr. Wooster has spent a significant amount of time in large lecture on the political, social, and economic "turmoil" in England. What did he argue was his purpose for doing this? (Why should we care about what was happening in England? Furthermore, how did this "turmoil" effect colonists during the Revolutionary period? <-- SIGNIFICANCE!!)
    • In the lead essays of your CV textbook, Hollitz offers context for the historical period in each chapter. Then, he provides evidence (primary sources) to support his claims.

When writing your essays, you must include context to inform the reader (your History, Composition, and Seminar instructors) that you fully understand the topic.
