How does media construct ideas of gender and sexuality?

  • Axe Body Spray Commercial
    • What message or messages about gender are being communicated in this media artifact?
    • Who is the target audience of this media? How can you tell? How might the media’s construction of gender tie to its audience?
    • What type of role, if any, do advertisements like this play in shaping men's expectations of women's role in society?
  • Ashton Kutcher Nikon Ad
    • Who are the most powerful people in this commercial? What makes them powerful?
    • Consider the positioning of different actors, what they look like, how they dress, how they interact with each other, etc?
    • What reactions do the women have to noticing that Ashton is taking their pictures? Would this reaction take place in real life if the situation were actually taking place? What if it were not Ashton Kutcher taking pictures, but someone who is not famous?
    • What message or messages about gender are being communicated in this media artifact?
    • What purpose do these gendered messages serve in society?

  • Extra Credit Opportunity! Attend the Cisneros vs. CCISD Presentation on October 6th from 6:00-8:00pm on the second floor of the Library as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month festivities. Write up a one page synopsis describing your experience of the event and one new thing that you learned from the event, and turn your synopsis in on Tuesday (10/11) for extra credit!
