In paragraph 58, Johns outlines a number of questions that teachers should discuss with their students regarding authority and control of language in their classrooms. Go through and answer her list of questions in as much detail as you can. When you are finished, reread your answers and use them to help you write a letter to an incoming student in which you explain the concepts of discourse communities, authority, and control and explain the relationships among them. Then, explain why having an explicit understanding of these concepts is useful and give specific examples from your own experiences to illustrate what you are saying.
