Good Morning!

Writing Center Ethnography Workshop

  • Turn in one-page response on Wardle

No Class Thursday 10/25

...but that does not mean you won't have homework.

Now that we have proposed to research a discourse community, we must now begin to conduct our ethnography. Every student will be responsible for keeping a research log.

In this research journal, you will track all your data collection activities. You will take notes at meetings; you will collect emails, instant messages, text messages, memos, and agendas, to name a few forms of communication.

Take notes on your research techniques and write down questions as they come into your mind. Track your course of progress and think about what or how you would like your research to develop.

Go forth and research!

Homework for Tuesday 10/30:

  • Read:
Tony Mirabelli, "Learning to Serve: The Language and Literacy of Food Service Workers" 538-556
  • Write:
A one-page response to this prompt:
While Johns focused on participation in academic Discourses and Wardle focused on participation in white-collar, professional Discourse, Mirabelli chooses to focus on participation in a restaurant Discourse. Why? What is he contributing to the conversation on Discourses by doing so?
  • Annotated Bibliography of 5 sources in APA format. At least 2 of these sources must be scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • I will also check your research log for entries and progress
