  • Watch film clip of Dog Town & Z-Boys to illustrate how different literacies are developed and sponsored.

Now that we have an understanding of literacy sponsors, let us apply Deborah Brandt's concept to the movie clip:

  • What types of literacy sponsors ceated and advanced skateboarding? What kind of skills were passed along to create this literacy? Who acted as sponsors? What institutions or establishments sponsored this literacy? What circumstances/scenarios influenced or affected skateboarding?
  • Think about style . How would your own, unique style inflect or influence your literacy?
  • How did skateboarders "appropriate" their literacy?
