First Year Symposium

FYS Grade:

  • Outline submitted to Blackboard = 5%
  • Presentation = 60%
  • Tri-fold board = 20%
  • Evaluation of self and other team members = 5%
  • Visiting 2 other presentations = 10%
  • Total = 100%
  • You will form a presentation based on the American war your group was assigned on Monday, November 6th.
  • All citations will need to be in APA format.
    • This includes pictures! All pictures must be cited in APA format as well.
  • Time slots will run in 30 minute increments between 10 am and 2 pm. (e.g., 10-10:30 am, 10:30-11 am, etc.)
    • Two teams will present during each time slot.
  • Monday, November 20, your team will submit a detailed outline of your presentation in BlackBoard for feedback.
    • Only one member has to upload this for the entire team to receive credit.
  • Your team will be provided with feedback and corrections to make. These corrections will need to be reflected at First-Year Symposium during your presentation
  • Wednesday, November 29, we will have a practice run during seminar for FYS where you will receive feedback on your presentation; suggestions made on this day should be reflected in your final presentation during FYS

The day of First-Year Symposium:

  • Please be in the UC Anchor Ballroom no less than 10 minutes before your time slot begins (the entire team!).
  • Dress business casual!
    • No ripped jeans, short, or revealing clothing.
    • Wear comfortable shoes!
  • First-Year Symposium (your presentation and visits to at least 2 other presentations) is worth 20% of your overall grade in seminar for the semester.
    • At any time during First-Year Symposium (Thursday, November 30 or Friday, December 1), you will need to visit a total of 2 other presentations. When you decide to complete this is up to you. Plan ahead as the day ends at 3 pm and all of your forms must be turned in to my office (Faculty Center, room 113) by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1st.
    • Forms will be available at the information table at FYS.
    • One presentation may be from within the triad.
    • One must be from presentation outside the triad.

FYS Calendar:

  • November 20 - FYS Work Day--no Seminar class; Draft of FYS presentation due in Seminar BlackBoard by 11:59 pm
  • November 29 - In-class practice for FYS
  • November 30 - Day 1 of FYS: There are presentations which you may attend from 9 am to 3 pm.
  • December 1 - Day 2 of FYS: The day you will actually present! You must attend a minimum of 2 presentations total from either of the two days of the FYS.
  • December 1 - Review forms of 2 presentations due in my office (Faculty Center, room 113) by 3:00 p.m.
  • December 3 - Evaluation of self and other team members due to Blackboard by 11:59 pm

First-Year Symposium Presentation Content

  • Introduction (which two countries or factions are fighting, start and end date, important background information)
  • Major Causes of the War
  • Major Battles of the War (including dates and places) and the Significance of Each Battle
  • Conclusion/Outcome and Consequences of the War (who won, who lost, what did each side get/give up, what are the consequences for the United States as a whole, what are the consequences for American history)

Your presentations should be between 7 and 10 minutes long

Tri-fold Board

  • Your tri-fold board should contain the important content information from your presentation
  • Your tri-fold board should be visually pleasing
  • Your tri-fold board should reflect the content of your presentation (think before using glitter, flowers, stickers, etc)
