Department of Life Sciences:
Welcome to the Division of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology (EEMB)

The Department of Life Sciences consists of two divisions:

The Division of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology explores the interactions of organisms with each other and with their physical environment. Over time, such interactions produce changes in both the organisms and the environment, so this division's research interests range from the development of an understanding of processes, to modeling such processes, to practical applications in business, law, and public policy.

Faculty Members affiliated with the Division of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology have primary research interests that lie within this Division's focus. In many cases, however, a faculty member's interests are also dovetail with the focus of BAMS. For example, the research interest of a faculty member in EEMB may be the molecular genetics of sea grasses or sharks, the therapeutic or toxic effects of native south Texas plants, or the anatomical adaptations of reptiles living in a grassland ecosystem.

The Division of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology houses the Biology Program and the Mariculture Program which offer the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology: A student may earn the B.S. in Biology by following a Life Science Education (Grades 8-12) Concentration or one of eight "tracks" based on his or her interests:
• Ecology Track • Marine Biology Track
• Cell / Molecular Biology Track • Microbiology Track
• Animal Biology Track • Plant Biology Track
• Integrative Biology Track • General Biology Track

Programs of study ("majors") in the sciences are always interdisciplinary: Biology or Mariculture students take courses from BAMS faculty, EEMB faculty, from the Biology, Biomedical Sciences and Mariculture programs and from other departments (e.g., Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Coastal and Marine System Science, Business).
