Child abuse whether we like it is increasing at rapid rates all over the world. “In 2000 alone, 4 children died each day from child abuse or neglect (Lanning).” If we could begin to understand how common this issue is and just how many children are enduring it and even dying everyday from it. Prevention is the key. One of the most effective ways we as a society can prevent child abuse is by educating ourselves on this issue. Education seems to be the only key to prevention. People believe that one of the mistakes we often make when dealing with child abuse is concentrating for the most part on child abuse and what could we do about it to prevent it?
Have you ever focuses on the persons who actually are guilty of abuse? It is so easy to point fingers at the guilty but maybe they are the ones who need the most help. The main cause of child abuse is the fact that many adult, and now teens, are not ready to become good parents, but mostly just rebel with the fact that they need to be punished. Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) America is working to provide informative classes for adults wanting to become parents in which they learn of all the responsibilities that come with parenting. With forming a rebellion by educating parents and young adults about childcare, we could eventually prevent child abuse from even starting. Another solution to the on going struggle of child abuse is dealing directly with schools. Teachers have always been trained in dealing with abused children but at the same time, how many of those teachers responded to this action by doing nothing. The last solution that stood out to me was an organization called moms and cops. Basically police officers are helping out the community by talking to kids and telling them never to talk to strangers etc… In small communities this is working very well, but it should be further investigated and brought about it in more areas and more communities.
“Since 1972, PCA America has been building awareness by providing education and inspiring hope to everyone involved in the effort to prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children (Prevent).” PCA America has designed a comprehensive strategy comprised of a variety of community-based programs to prevent child abuse through educating families and giving them the support necessary for healthy family functioning. To me these programs are helping parents control themselves when it comes to child abuse. With out direct contact with families, then there is no real way of solving problems or preventing abuse before it actually happens. Families essentially need to help themselves. By means, the members of this organization would like a chance to work with newly married couples without kids simply to stop child abuse before it this even an issue. These programs are designed to teach adults just how to be good parents and handle the responsibilities that come with it (Axford). While hospitals, schools and community agencies have a critical role to play in implementing this child abuse prevention strategy, they cannot fully shoulder the responsibility. Educational campaigns are necessary to make the public aware of the seriousness of the problem and its implications as well how individuals can make a difference. It is also agued that prevention of abuse is in part tied to providing therapeutic treatment to children or young people who have been abused or neglected (Alexander).
When you think about it, children spend a great deal of their life in school. Schools in general should be a safe haven for children. Unfortunately sometimes it is even used as an escape. Child abuse and neglect prevention programs should provide comprehensive instruction at all age levels, including early childhood. Programs also need to promote social emotional learning to help all children, particularly the maltreated children, to become more resilient and cope more effectively with challenges. We need to redirect resources to programs that provide support to families and educate parents because most abuse is caused by stress and lack of support (Mondale). Prevention programs should send more messages to maltreated children that schools are safe places to seek and find help. “School nurses and other school health services personnel can take leadership roles in developing individual health plans for maltreated children that focus on restoring health, promotion wellness, and minimizing or removing barriers to learning (Lanning).” Children know that parents have bad days, that they have problems and that sometimes they take their problems out on their kids. This does not make them bad people. At the same time, children should be taught and informed that there are limits to acceptable behavior. As well, children should learn that this type of treatment is never deserved or their fault. Most teachers cannot protect children, preschool through adolescence, without fear or paranoia and this should not be an issue. Teachers should know how to cope with this situation and understand with all their heart that it is in the best interest of the child that they report anything.
I cannot stress how much it hurts and how it has affected me to read about how many children are dying everyday due to child abuse. For the most part child abuse should never exist but it is always bound to happen, but the numbers must decrease if we want to save lives. Through counseling parents, working with schools and community involvement we are giving these children a better chance at a better life. Organizations like PCA America will continue to work towards child abuse prevention but in the end it is all up to the public and how much we are willing to do to make a difference and save our children. Child abuse and neglect in the United States now represents a national emergency… Protection of children form harm is not just an ethical duty; it is a matter of national survival (Alexander).
My solution to child abuse is to prevent it from happening to however I can. We must believe that the problem starts with unfit parents and carries on throughout the live of many individuals. People feel that there should be parenting classes and people out there tell you not to bring a baby into this world simply to ruin their life. A lot of things are brought to believing that parents are intentional monsters, but there is so much responsibility and stress brought along with it. The issue starts at home and is taken to school with these children. If neighbors do not report something then teachers should respond to the distress of the children. An organization that surprised me was the moms and cops organization. It has not been used to much but it should be being that it is a great way to be safe. Low income families and their neighbors should be watched by a group of police officers focused specifically on child abuse.
Child abuse is something I have always cared about but I was never really as passionate about it as I am now. Although raising a child can get tough, you just look at their face and it will bring you a smile. That is why I can’t believe how many children are getting abused out there and getting away with it. I can’t imagine why and how any person could hurt an innocent child. People should want to get the word out on how they can do something to prevent this tragedy from happening. There are so many opportunities to make a difference but we have to want it bad enough to make it come true. I want to help prevent child abuse from happening and also want to educate the community on how they can help strive for a better tomorrow.

Child abuse is something I have always cared about but I was never really as passionate about it as I am now. I have one almost two year old little cousin who probably has one of the few soft spots in my heart. Over the holidays, I was probably his caretaker for a good three weeks and made me realize it is a hard job to raise a kid. His mother which is my cousin had him when she was 15 and still wants to party even though she has a kid. I told her that if she wasn’t ready to take care of him, I would gladly take good care of him like any child should be taken care of. I told her I would take him from her and be his guardian if she didn’t want to take care of him. Although it can get tough, you just look at their face and it will bring you a smile.
