Subject: Portfolio Planning Memorandum
My name is Eva Sepulveda. I have been married for 7 1/2 years to a wonderful man, and we have two beautiful daughters (4 months and 5 years of age). I have been working for a great dentist here in Corpus Christi for the past 7 1/2 years as a registered dental hygienist. Prior to that, I served in the United States Army for seven years specializing in the dental field. I am also a Gulf War veteran. About three years ago, my husband and I decided that I needed to return to school in order to apply to dental school. January of 2002 is when I began my journey towards a Bachelor's Degree in Biology (Pre-Dental). My writing experience basically consists of scientific research papers and science lab reports required throughout my TAMUCC experience. At this time, I really do not know what kind of writing I am interested in, but I am interested in gaining writing experience through this class that will help me in my dental career.
Portfolio I - Writing on the Job: Workplace Literacy
As a pre-dental student, I have decided to interview my employer, Dr. Cheryl Rhoden. She has been a general dentist for over 15 years. At this time, I do not know if I will specialize in a particular dental area, but general dentistry is what I am more familiar with. She has agreed to meet with me at one of her dental offices to discuss her role and responsibilities as a dentist, the expectations and responsibilities of her staff, and the important role of written and electronic communication in meeting all those responsibilities. She agreed to provide sample documents utilized in her office.
Portfolio II - Writing a Resume Criteria: Recognizing and Implementing Strategies
Since I am not a dentist yet and have been a registered dental hygienist for over 12 years, I have decided to update my previous resume into a Functional resume. I plan to research the different types of resumes and make an apppointment with Career Services at TAMUCC.
Portfolio III - Responding to a Community Need: Generating Viable Solutions
There is a need for dental health awareness of children in low-income communities here in Corpus Christi. One community, the Northside Manor Section 8 Housing, is an example. In conjunction with a health fair at that location, dental health screenings and dental education would be rendered to the children. My contact for this project would be Directive Patrol Officer Henry Sepulveda with the Corpus Christi Police Department. I would also conduct surveys to the parents of the children in order to get a better understanding of their dental needs.
As a writer, I hope that my writng skills will have greatly improved. I also hope that I will have achieved the ability to communicate in a clear, effective manner to any audience. As a dental healthcare provider, I hope to have been beneficial to the children of low-income communities.
