!Search All Databases updates
8-29-2007
After talking with a number of faculty, students, and library staff about the Search All Databases interface, I thought I'd create a wiki where everyone (library staff) could share the things that people are saying about the Search All Databases interface. Here's the link to it [[http://critical.tamucc.edu/wiki/WikiReference/SearchAllDatabases | Search-All-Databases feedback]]. Please feel free to share what you're hearing from patrons.

___________

I’ve created a help guide for Search All Databases for the internal use of library staff. It contains some jargon and short cuts that make it inappropriate for patron use so please don’t share it with patrons yet. My next step is to modify it so that it doesn’t contain the jargon and short cuts and make it more ‘patron friendly’. For now I just wanted to share it with you. I hope it helps. Comments, compliments, and criticism are welcome.

I updated it on 8-27-2007. Now it contains more info on finding a complete list of databases and more info on using the My List function to create a list of saved articles to print or email.

Link to it at http://falcon.tamucc.edu/~ssutton/SAD.doc.

Student email accounts will be available August 6, 2007 for all those who have applied and been accepted for enrollment.

New student Novell accounts will be available Monday, August 20. This will cause a big surge in student use over the first week of school as students come to the library to get their accounts set up.

!Student I.D.s and Computer Accounts from Denise

Ben Soto stopped by the library this morning and shared this information.
To get new student I.D.s:
Go to the Banner site, http://banner.tamucc.edu/ID/
Once a new student I.D. is obtained, the above URL will give students a link to the
Student Computer Accounts Manager page,
https://islander.tamucc.edu/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/sammgr/newpassword.cgi
From here, students will be able to activate their:
• Islander Student E-Mail Account
• Novell Computer Accounts
• Rapport Accounts
WebCT will soon be added to this list.
* What used to be the NewUser Workstations in the Reference area now have a link to the above Banner URL.

Note: Sally asked that these workstations have links to both the Banner page and to the Student Computer Accounts Manager page. "this has been done"

Kestrel e-mail accounts will still work, but student e-mail accounts are now known as Islander E-Mail Accounts.

Students can also get to the above information by visiting the S.A.I.L. page and clicking on My Student ID. With the large numbers of students arriving for the Fall Semester, we will certainly need to route students to the ER workstations. Lines begin to form at what used to be the NewUser workstations.

I called the Student Computer Help Desk, and that desk will re-locate to CCH when classes begin. In the meantime, the Help Desk is in CI 227.

!Treasure Hunt!
Deanna has changed most of the icons in Portal, but there may have been some that she missed. If you see an old one, please let her know...Maybe you can print out the page, or tell her how you got there.

What do you think about posting new things to the top, so people don't have to scroll down to see what's new? Sally

!New LexisNexis Interface is now active!

!Printing Cost Increase - from Abel
The Pharos printing system will be increased by 1 cent beginning August 20th student’s will now be paying 8 cents per page this coming !semester. By the way this was approved by the student government. Library staff working around the printing areas may have noticed little green stickers plastered on the printers informing students of the upcoming increase. Actually, if you noticed the sticker you’re very, very observant – they’re not very big. This is the marketing campaign print services has spent the 1 cent increase on. There is NO plan of a mass communication campaign to inform the students of this increase either this is according to my source in University Services.

[[#idquestions]]
!Questions about user names, userIDs, passwords, etc...(Kristen)

Ok, I am thoroughly confused at this point. As I understand it, the students now have a student ID (A########) and a user name (kdavis), in addition to their SSN, each of which is used for different purposes . I've been reading the e-mails sent to and fro, and '''thought''' I understood, but two incidents today have knocked everything in the water.

The first involved a returning student who set up his new student ID (or bannerID, as I've heard it called) at the NewUser station. He then tried to get into S.A.I.L using the new ID and was denied access. He ended up using his old ID (example, kdavis)and password, and it worked.

The second involved a new student who had already set up his new Student ID (A######) from home. When he tried to get to the account activation page, the system wouldn't let him in.

What is the difference between the new and old user names, what systems use them, when will the different IDs be active (Aug. 6, Aug. 20, 12th class day)? Any clarification would be helpful!

!ANSWER - (stacey)

The way I understand it is.... The reason they are having trouble is that as of right now, or really the 6th... Yes they can get their BannerID BUT.... this is only useful for their email account. The email accounts are the only thing activated right now. A student can not get a computer account until the 20th then they will be able to use that BannerID everywhere.

I guess if you think of it as Novell and Kestrel and SAIL they are totally different databases holding student information for different reasons. Each one is individually uploaded with a list of students. Novell does not get it's first upload until the 19th, after that it gets a new upload of any changes to the enrollment (new students that enroll and pay for their classes) every night until the 2nd week of classes.

Hope that helps.
