TAMUCC SciTechWiki College of Science & Technology

Background

A listserv is an automated system to manage electronic mailing lists. People can subscribe to a listserv, and any messages that are sent to the listserv are then automatically forwarded to all of the listserv's subscribers. Many listserv systems also provide features for file transfers, archiving, and indexing.

The College of Science and Technology, and several of its departments and organizations, use listservs extensively to communicate information among its members. For example, the College's "scitech-list" is frequently used to distribute announcements and meeting notices to the College faculty and staff, as well as house discussions on curricular issues and other topics. All faculty and staff within the College are expected to be subscribers to this listserv.

This document identifies many of the listservs that are run by the College, the steps needed to subscribe or unsubscribe from a listserv, and information about how you can get a listserv for your organization or course.

How do I know what listservs are on sci.tamucc.edu

For a complete and updated list of all listservs sci.tamucc.edu houses, Please go to: http://sci.tamucc.edu/mailman/listinfo

College and department listservs @ sci.tamucc.edu

The following is a list of the college and department listservs that are run from the sci.tamucc.edu server.

scitech-list - College-wide announcements and discussions
cams-list - Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CAMS)
pals-list - Department of Physical and Life Sciences (PALS)
sonhs-list - School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SONHS)
palsfac-list - PALS faculty
palsfacg-list - PALS graduate faculty
ccs-list - Center for Coastal Studies

Thus, sending a message to scitech-list@sci.tamucc.edu will deliver that message to everyone subscribed to the scitech-list listserv (i.e., the whole College). Sending a message to pals-list@sci.tamucc.edu will deliver the message to PALS faculty and staff.

How to add or remove yourself from a listserv

To subscribe to one of these listservs, send email with a subject line of "subscribe" to the "-request" address for the listserv. For scitech-list, the request address is

scitech-list-request@sci.tamucc.edu

The -request address of each listserv is used for administrative requests such as subscribing and unsubscribing that shouldn't be sent to the full list of subscribers on the list. To unsubscribe from a listserv, send an email with a subject line of "unsubscribe" to the listserv's -request address.

Of course, if you want help with listserv subscription on sci.tamucc.edu lists, you can always send email to camsadm@sci.tamucc.edu and he will help you out.

Other College listservs

Besides the College and departmental listservs listed above, there are a large number of other listservs that are maintained on the sci.tamucc.edu server. Some other faculty-oriented listservs:

cosc-list - Computer Science Program
mathannounce-list - Mathematics Program
mathfac-list - Mathematics Faculty
esci-list - Environmental Science Program

We also have a number of student-oriented listservs for students within a particular discipline or for student organizations. A very important student listserv is opportunities-list@sci.tamucc.edu; this listserv is intended for announcements of scholarship, employment, research, and other opportunities for students. All Science and Technology majors are encouraged to subscribe to this listserv, and faculty are encouraged to send opportunity announcements to this listserv instead of doing mass-mailings to other listservs.

opportunities-list - Opportunities for students
biolstu-list - Biology students
escistu-list - Environmental Science students
mathgrad-list - Mathematics graduate students
csclub - Computer Science Club
mathclub - Mathematics Club
ets-list - Engineering Technology Society
geoclub - Geology Club
gisso-list - Geographic Information Science Student Organization
misclub - Management Information Science Club
sciclub-list - Science Club
studentgov-list - TAMUCC Student Government
tmmsn-list - Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network
tribeta-list - Tri-Beta Society

And finally, there are a large number of course-oriented listservs, including biol1406-list, biol1407-list, cosc4342-list, geol3442-list, and so on (you get the idea).

How to get a listserv created for your course or program

If you are in the College of Science and Technology and you would like a listserv for your course, department, or other group, simply send email to camsadm@sci.tamucc.edu and let him know what you would like the listserv to be called. Generally we prefer for listserv names to end with "-list", so that people who send messages to the listserv realize that they're in fact sending a message to a large group of people and not just a single person.

For courses, we suggest naming the listserv after the course number, such as esci1401-list or biol1407-list. If there are multiple sections of a course and each section needs its own listserv, you can suffix the list with a letter or section number, such as math1470.201-list or cosc3342b-list.

If you're not in the College of Science and Technology, you may want your listserv to be housed on the University's listserv instead of using sci.tamucc.edu. However, if you really want to be on the sci.tamucc.edu listserv, contact camsadm@sci.tamucc.edu and he will see what can be done.

The sci.tamucc.edu mail archive

Our listserv system also has a integrated mail archive, which archives and indexes all of the messages sent to a listserv and allows people to browse them from the World Wide Web. Access to each listservs archive is though its own home page. For some old listserv archives please go to: http://www.sci.tamucc.edu/mailarch.

Determining who is subscribed to a listserv

We don't publish the addresses that are on a listserv, because there are people who love to search the Internet for lists of email messages to which they can send "spam" or "junk email".
