If experiencing difficulties using a USB flash drive in the front panel USB ports, try plugging into the back USB ports. Some flash drives will only work in the back.

If you are unable to get your USB flash drive to work on Library systems, please contact or come by the Systems office, room 108. x5528

Also, if you would like for us to research the brand of USB flash drive you are currently using (and it is not on this list), please bring it by the Systems office, room 108. We will take down some information and see if we can get it to work on our computers in the future.

Here are a few tips for patrons when using a flash/thumb drive out in Reference:

  1. Plug in the flash/thumb drive AFTER logging in, and the browser has appeared. I think with a lot of patrons, the first thing they do is plug in their flash/thumb drive and then log in. The computer already has enough to load up whenever someone logs in, so adding a flash/thumb drive to that initial startup can cause the flash/thumb drive to get lost in the shuffle.
  2. If the flash/thumb drive still does not work, have the patron RESTART the PC, and then log back in. But before restarting, make sure the flash/thumb drive is not in any of the USB ports.
  3. Be patient. Some flash drives take a whole lot longer to load than others. However, if more than 2 minutes have elapsed after plugging it in, it's probably a safe bet that it will not load.
  4. Try the back USB ports instead of the front. The back USB ports have more power running to them, and some flash drives need that extra power.
  5. ALWAYS utilize the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon next to the system clock in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen. Simply click on this icon once and you'll see the small menu pop up to safely remove the flash/thumb drive. If this icon is simply not there, it more than likely means the flash/thumb drive never loaded to begin with, and therefore it is already safe to remove the flash/thumb drive.
