When I completed college twenty years ago and began teaching, I remember thinking that I took an awful lot of classes but I really feel that I knew how to teach English! The whole first semester I kept telling myself know more than they do! Later (years, not months) I started examining what I was teaching and how it would affect my students in college or in the workplace. In the high school setting teachers focus on the standardized test and how to get students to pass this test and with the higher level students they focus on coursework that will get them into college. not sure any focus is placed on skills like collaborative learning. They think collaborative in the classroom equals copying or cheating. We as teachers fail to recognize that in the real world people work together to solve problems. I think it is our responsibility as teachers to teach our students where to look for the answers, how to think, and how to communicate those answers to others.
