- Complete Activity #1 "Participant-Observation Research of a Field Site" (pgs. 227-231).
- Since we are on a short schedule, for our purposes the choice of field site can be any of the following:
- You can physically visit a site.
- You can visit a site digitally. For example, throughout The Elements of Literacy, they talk about looking at literacy in films/videos.
- You can revisit a site in your memory, somewhere you have already been but you have good enough memories you can revisit and take another look at what happened.
- You can look at texts and other visual representations of a site. These can be very rich resources.
- Step 6 will come from the info in your Annotated Bibliography, so you will already have that info.
So, for example, I might choose from one of these examples:
- Colegio Jacinto Trevino Those of you who were in my visual rhetoric will remember the discussion we had on this event that happened over 30 years ago. This is a site that technically no longer exists, but by using the artifacts that are available, I can analyze the site and gather information related to literacy.

- http://www.shidhulai.org/ I watched a very moving video related to this organization on NPR. Using the info on the website I could gather info on what literacy means and how it functions in this setting.
So hopefully you can see that choosing a site from which to do your literacy ethnography work, you are not limited by geography, time, etc.
- For this part, you can continue to focus on the same site you chose for Part I, or you can choose something completely different.
- Complete Activity #2 "Ethnographic Interviewing (pgs. 231-236 in The Elements of Literacy).
- You have many options for how to do the interview:
- In person
- Over the phone
- Through email
- Through other social media channels
- If I was going to continue with my project from Part I, I might try to find someone who was part of the Colegio, or someone who knew about the event, or someone who lived during the same time period and had similar experiences.
- For Step #7, you don't have to do all of the options. Choose the ones that make most sense for your project.
- Present your work to the class.
- Since this is a completely online class, you will have to present your work electronically. Some options for doing that might be:
- Just about everyone can take a video using their phones these days. You don't have to video yourself. You can video talk about your work and show that. Part of what you video might be the site(s) you visited.
- I use a program called Camtasia to make videos for my online classes. This allows you to record what is on your computer screen, and also talk about what the audience is seeing.
- I highly discourage doing Power Point presentations, but if you do choose that option, at a minimum you have to have audio of you explaining the info (not music playing in the background).
- All of this can be easily uploaded to You Tube. You can make the settings so that only certain people can view them, but the info you are working on should be ok for the public view option.
- There are many more options so take this opportunity to learn about ways to present online.
