Fishbowl Discussions are used often for large group discussions. A small group is chosen to discuss the assigned reading and the larger group listens. How the larger group interacts with the smaller group can vary. But for our purposes, the small group will present their discussion of the reading, and then those in the larger group will write a summary of what was presented by the smaller group. The small group can discuss the reading any way they choose. So we'll follow this schedule:

Week One

  • Small Group - Last name begins with the letters M-Z. Those in the small group will discuss the assigned topic and post by the time designated in the Schedule.
  • Large Group - Everyone else not in the Small Group. Those n the large group will write a summary of what was presented by participants in the small group. Summaries are to be posted by the time designated in the Schedule. Summaries are not to be posted early!!!

Week Two

  • Small Group - Last name begins with the letters G-L
  • Follow same instructions as for Week One.

Week Three

  • Small Group - Last name begins with the letters A-F
  • Follow same instructions as for Week One.

Week Four

  • Everyone will participate in review and overall questions.
  • All students will be required to post something. You could talk about things that you learned or things that stood out to you in the discussions. You could add additional ideas or ask other questions about the discussions. Or other things you think would be good.
