It is evident from this section that many illiterate students are coming into college, causing composition instructors to have to resort to lowering the standards of their courses and teaching remedial. This is obviously unfair to the students who do have adequate or above average writing skills and therefore have to suffer from the lack of challenge so that the students in need of remedial courses can catch up. I believe a solution would be to have students write an essay or take some type of test so that their writing abilities can be assessed in order to divide the more advanced students from the others so that they may take different composition classes at the level suitable for them. I realize this would be difficult to implement as Rose informs us that writing instruction is not a major concern for the academy. Do you think this solution could work, or do you have any other possible ideas to solve this problem?
