I thought the following might be good activities to use as anticipatory sets in teaching SMS to SAE conversion (and vice versa) and the importance thereof:
1. Have students text each other as they normally would. Next, have each recipient translate the text message to SAE as best as they can. See if the translation matches the senders intended message.
2. Alternately, or in addition, give half the students a passage from a book that is in SAE (a short paragraph), and have each of them translate it to SMS and text it to another student who will then translate it back into SAE. See how well those translations match the original SAE text.
3. Begin discussing the audiences and purposes for SMS and the audiences and purposes for academic writing in SAE.
