For your Writing to Fill a Need Portfolio, we will work with the TAMUCC Financial Assistance Department. The main focus of the project will be to (1) evaluate the information that is communicated to students through the Financial Aid website, and (2) based on the evaluation, develop recommendations to improve the website in ways that will help students.

Here is the process we will follow to complete the project:

  • Each student will choose one section from the site (listed below) and evaluate it based on whether the site is user friendly. (We will work together in class to create a list of questions to analyze user friendly.)

    • Loans

  • Each student will also evaluate the Financial Aid TV link and evaluate it based on whether the site is user friendly.
  • Each student will write about what was found from the evaluation of the section the student chose and the review of Financial Aid TV.
  • After these initial reviews, each student will conduct a usability test of the Financial Assistance website using one of the following methods.
    • Survey - must be administered to at least 6 current TAMUCC students or 6 prospective TAMUCC students. (You cannot mix the two groups.)
    • Field Study - must be administered to at least 3 current TAMUCC students or 3 prospective TAMUCC students. (You cannot mix the two groups.)
    • We will work together in class to develop questions for the surveys and field tests (http://www.webstyleguide.com/wsg3/2-universal-usability/5-in-design-process.html).
  • Upon completion of the usability test, each student will write up the results of the usability test.
  • Each student will write a final report that will include the information gathered from the web section review, the Financial Aid TV review, and the usability test. Then based on the findings of the reviews and tests, the student will develop a list of recommendations that will assist the Financial Assistance Department in making the information distributed through its website even more user friendly for students.
