What is Identification?

This means something very specific in your History classes. Identification requires you to provide the basics about a historical term and to explain its historical significance.

The good news: Learning how to do this well will help you gain a greater appreciation for the study of history and to write your exam essays !!

Step One: The Basics

Answer the following questions about the person, place, event, or thing using complete sentences. This is the easy part!

  • What?
  • When?
  • Where?

Step Two: The Historical Significance

Write another complete sentence using the person, place or thing you identified + "is/was historically significant because ..." This is the hard part!

For this part, you need to communicate in writing how and why this term is important to history. In other words, what impact did this person, place, event or thing have on history?
