• Stanza -The way that lines are grouped together in poems to define distinct thoughts or ideas. Allows the author to identify for the reader particular points and ideas they want to convey
  • Lineation - Structuring of lines, punctuation, etc. Helps to convey feeling and rhythm, which can add to or develop the feeling a reader or listener gets from the poem.
  • Genre - A subgroup based on shared characteristics of an art form. Protest can be considered a genre itself, which helps reader/listener identify purpose and meaning
  • Theme - A lesson or message that the author is trying to convey. Organizes poems around identifiable issues or problems, like racial inequality
  • Imagery - A description of real life senses. Gives the reader a sense of setting or context that they may not be familiar with (someone else's perspective or experience).
