• Nationalism - begins with the rise of nation states, also results from imperialistic ideas of the 20th century; nationalism leads to entangling alliances which set up a path to WWI (The Great War) because it creates a domino effect. American imperialism and ideas of "policing the West" lead to a strong sense of American nationalism, too. America initially tries to stay out of the war, but events like the interception of the Zimmerman telegram build nationalist sentiment because they are offended that the Germans would offer parts of the US back to Mexico in exchange for their support.
