Freewriting

  • Let's freewrite for a few minutes about your experience searching for a speech.
    • What stood out as valuable or interesting in the speeches you found?
    • Did you have ideas before you began your search, or were you looking for something new?
    • Do you have heroes/role models that you tried to find?
  • When you finish, we'll discuss!

Rhetorical Analysis

  • Now that we've talked a bit about the direction this project is taking, let's get down to some of the nitty-gritty.

Example

  • As a class, let's look at the example in project description and discuss what we need to know about it in order to be successful on this project.
    • Once we've had a chance to practice, we'll move on to examining your choices!
  • Let's make a list of who's doing what!

Context

  • The first thing the project description asks you to do is to investigate the surrounding factors that motivated/inspired/necessitated/contributed to the creation and delivery of the speech.
    • Let's take some time to discuss what that means and then use the interwebs to unearth some of that stuff that you can incorporate into the essay!
    • You should be making a list of important information as you conduct this investigation. This will serve as early steps in your writing process!
    • As you work on this, I'll come around and see what speeches you've narrowed this down to.

Author & Audience

  • This part is a bit more difficult because it requires some analysis!
    • You should be including information in your Rhetorical Analysis about the intended audience for your speech.
    • This may seem straight-forward, but remember that the actual audience when the speech was delivered only represents part of the whole intended audience. For whom do you think this speech was meant in the bigger picture?

Homework

  • Read chapters 2 & 3 in EAA (over Pathos and Ethos).
  • Complete a Reading Response based on the following prompts:
    • Write definitions of Ethos and Pathos in your own words.
    • Locate an ad that uses a spokesperson. Describe the ad and provide some context. Evaluate the credibility of the spokesperson. How does the spokesperson establish credibility? Would you choose this person if you owned the company or product? Why or why not?
    • Locate a written example of humor not listed in the book and describe why it works.
