Project Title: A Web-based Network Management Tool using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Semester: Fall 2003
Committe Chair: Dr. Dulal C. Kar
Committee Member 1: Dr. R. Stephen Dannelly
Committee Member 2: Dr. John Fernandez
Project Description: As networks grow bigger, inter-network management becomes a challenging task for the network manager. A Network Management Tool that shows the system information, routing information, Transmission Control Protocol / User Datagram protocol (TCP/UDP) connection information of network devices like routers, servers, printers and workstations is of great help for the network manager. These devices hold a virtual information database called Management Information Base (MIB), which contains information about objects like hardware parameters, configuration parameters, and performance statistics. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application layer protocol that allows accessing, retrieving, or modifying the information contained in the MIBs of the devices. The retrieved information from these devices can be used to monitor the network. A Web-based application using SNMP that will query MIBs of network devices and display the retrieved information is developed. The tool also allows the manager to set (manipulate) the values of read-writable parameters.
