Project Title: An Improved Control System for Mobile, Marine Sensor Platforms

Project Description: Research in aquatic environments such as estuaries, rivers, and coastal bays presents several challenges to the scientest. One of the most pressing issues is how to efficiently and reliably gather data in shallow water areas-environments that often preclude the use of traditional boats. For several years, the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and the Division of Nearshore Research at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi have worked together to develop a remotely operated vessel (ROV)that can preform data logging activities in these shallow water environments. Current prototypes, however, lack sufficiently developed contol systems, and are limited to line of sight operation. This paper outlines the development of a more robust and sophisticated control system-one that allows remote control of the platform by a human operator and provides the foundation for autonomous operation.
