Project Title: Design and Evaluation of Community Portal
Semester: Spring 2008
Committe Chair: Dr. John Fernandez
Committee Member 1: Dr. David Thomas
Committee Member 2: Dr. Scott King
Project Description: The purpose of this project is to develop a digital community portal prototype for the City of Corpus Christi by applying Web design and usability principles. The City of Corpus Christi is one of the first pilot cities to provide Wi-Fi wireless network so as to minimize costs for government applications and to guarantee access to information. The Corpus Christi digital community portal prototype assists in meeting the needs of the community by providing a centralized hub of information. Rather than standalone, static Websites that provide fragmented information on a minimum of relevant topics, the portal prototype meets the needs of the community by encompassing content based on education, healthcare, entertainment, commerce, and government services to the coastal bend from a unified standpoint. A Web-based survey instrument was used to provide for evaluation of the prototype through the design and development stages. The instrument surveyed usability principles and utilization of key elements and provided recommendations on future developments.
