The
Cabeza de Vaca Earthmobile (Earthmobile) is a project funded
by the National Science Foundation. The Earthmobile works
together with the South Texas Rural Systemic Initiative (STRSI)
to achieve the following objectives: to bring geoscience education
to public middle school students in South Texas, to provide
geoscience training to their science teachers, and to increase
community awareness of geoscience issues. The Earthmobile
currently works with four school districts, these being Premont
I.S.D., Riviera I.S.D., Aransas County I.S.D., and San Diego
I.S.D.
The Earthmobile achieves these goals by organizing classroom
visits and Family Science Night Events at the schools, by
integrating the Global Learning Observations to Benefit the
Environment (GLOBE) program, and by providing professional
development to our middle school teachers.
The Earthmobile is aligned with the Science Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills curriculum. Our curriculum integrates
hands-on, inquiry-based, and field-based activities into our
activities to enhance the students' understanding of the topics
covered. Students also have access to computers and other
technology to support their scientific investigations.
