There she meets a Gebra named Al, who helps her conquer algebra in the land of the order of operations. Topics: order of operations Suggested Activities: PEMDAS practice relay: after dividing students into pairs, hand out bags with various wooden shapes and number cubes. Each pair works with contents of bag to construct simple algebraic problems. Students record the problems, along with solutions, on a sheet of paper to be checked by the instructor. Each bag will contain: 2 arch shapes that can be used as parenthesis, 2 long and 2 short rectangles than can be used as +, -, or x symbols and four number cubes. PEMDAS Math Olympics: after dividing students into pairs, hand them a bag, which contains a set of mnemonics for the order of operations and a set of the symbols for the order of operations. Each student will take one of the two sets. The students then put the cards in order according to the order of operations, and compare to see that they both agree. Once they come to an agreement, they are to work on several problems, which highlight the order of operations. The first team to hand in the worksheet, with all problems correct, is the winner.
