Phys 3490 - Selected Topics: Environmental Physics

List of course topics:
1. Global climate and the greenhouse effect; radiation balance between the surface and atmosphere of earth; models for weather and climate.
2. Local atmospheric conditions for air dispersion of pollutants, transport physics.
3. Physics of photosynthesis.
4. Introduction to Spectroscopy and its use in atmospheric physics.
5. Energy sources and energy conversion, storage, transport and costs. Comparitive study of fossil fuels, hydro, nuclear, wind, geothermal, solar and other alternate energy sources. Radiation health and safety issues, management of spent nuclear fuel, fast breeder technology.
6. Noise pollution, and its measurement using basic acoustics, and its mitigation.
7. Concept of risk and its quantification. "Acceptable risk", and models of production and consupmption for a sustainable society.
