
St. Andrews, South Georgia: Here's Sandy with a juvenile king penguin. Check out all the penguins in the background: population estimates for this single beach are in excess of 250,000 king penguins. As you can see, they aren't much afraid of humans. While I was taking this shot, another juvenile was pecking my tripod, trying to figure out what it was. To get a sense of how far south we are, this photo was taken before 4am, and it was fully light, as you can see.
